Hi All

Have just had a call to see if i can have a look at wetroom. Just wanted to ask some questions before i go and look at it on tues as im not too sure where to start.

Basicly she told me on the phone that she has a small downstairs cloakroom and wants it converting into a wet room the problems i have is that she said it has a concrete floor and she doesnt want a shower tray.

So would like some advice on what to do about the following

  • Pipework For Waste
  • Putting a Slope on floor for water to run into waste
  • preventnig water from running out of the room
  • She also wants to keep the radiator but i think thats not a good idea
  • Also wants to keep toilet but no basin , is this legal ?
Sorry if these are dumb questions but only been in the trade 2 years an this is the first wetroom ive had to look at so i dont want to getmyself into something that i cant mannage , Might not get the job but best to go prepared i think

Many thanks in advance

John

hi john you need ask you customer to get plumber 1st. in order to sort your pipe work and regulation. it would be to much work and risk if you have two years experience. just be hones with her and give her a price for tiling only. very good luck mate. kind regards isa.

If it's on a screed floor you need falls to the drain and I doubt the floor has these

As Opus said, Id recommend the customer a good plumber. There is a lot that can go wrong when tiling a wet room let alone fitting the entire thing out.

Building your First Wet Room

Not sure how hard it is to bust out concrete where your from but here in Vancouver most basement slabs are only about 3"-5" thick and we can bust up floors in less than a half day for a typical basement bathroom renovation.

A good plumber can help with the plumbing layout but if the toilet is not a wall hung I think this needs to be changed. Not having a basin in a washroom is crazy talk in my opinion - there are many small little sinks that take up next to no room. Vent lines (Soil Stacks???) need to be properly sized and here in Vancouver I only use a 2" Solid P Trap for these curbless options.

Removing concrete from the basement slab our slab on grade construction can run the risks of undermining bearing points so great care and the use of a structural engineer is key. Vapour barrier issues can come up as well.

With out the barrier or curb to contain the water from the shower in a coat closet I assume this tiny job will grow into a bear and most likely the client is looking for a simple fix. Many clients surprise me and if like you are doing like you said and walking in prepared they might have the budget to pull of the look.

It's not worth the liability to alter a homes mechanics or change point loads without an engineers drawing and permits. Start here and you quickly find out if the client is prepared for all the fees and steps necessary to achieve this simple look.
