Floor problem!

Got to do something i've always avoided!!

I've always removed old tiles and then relayed, but this next job dictates i've gotta tile over exsist'n tiles......................

Now i was think'n to use Pocelain (flexi) adhesive as i don't no what tiles are currently in situ?, but should i scar the surface/s or just clean them???

I have been told previously to do both mate. Give them a clean and rub them down with coarse sand paper or something and clean again.

As for adhesives I dont know which one specificly to use.

I know that tiles can be skimmed over prior to tiling them however, Im not sure if this can be done on floor tiles too. (perhaps with a latex screed or something).

Hope fully one of the experienced tiler can confirmt his for you mate.

You can tile over the existing ones....but you need to make sure they are in sound condition with no loose or cracked tiles...make good any bad area's...
You can clean the tiles with a degreaser( sugar soap is good )..
It would be advisable to use a flexi adhesive to tile over tiles with....

The thing with tiling over tiles is the height issues it causes....make sure you can get appliances back in etc....

For what reason can't the tiles be removed in this instance....?

Last time i overtiled i did as DH recommends by scrubbing down well with sugarsoap. I used Bal rapidset with AD1 admix as an adhesive. Lightly Scoring with an angle grinder could be an option if you think necesary but would depend on tile, mess created etc.

You don't need to score them just as Dave says as long as it isn't a large floor 😛ete

i had to over tile my own hall way that had quarry tiles down,they had been down 60 yrs,the chance of getting them up? anyway, i washed them down & tiled on top with no hassle........... so far!

Yeah, height seems ok (re doors ect.) but will need to double check when customer receive's tiles (their not quite sure on what they want yet???), the issue with tile'n over exsist'n tiles, is customer simply don't wonna pay the extra for me to remove tiles which also go under kitchen units, which isn't that much of a prob cos i can stop at unit legs (supports) and cut down kick boards after!!!

The floor area is 30 sq mtr's approx with a million cuts to do.............................. and to think these people live in a small Masion. :furious3:

All integrated, even oven, only fridge 2 worry about, but there's plenty of room 4 play...........thankfully!

you can use a slurry coat (2 parts adhesive to 1 part bonding agent).-belt and braces

or i would sugar soap as mentioned and use keraquick rapid
