Years ago my dad tiled his kitchen floor using a steel mesh nailed to the existing floor boards and the floor seems to have stood the test of time well.

Does anyone else use this technique?
Is there any reason why people use ply instead of the steel mesh? As with the mesh you only raise the floor level by a few mm plus the tile.

There are probably a couple of guys that remember that technique, was it the chicken wire......

Things have also moved on I'm afraid

Probably an expanded mesh in a solid sheet rather than linked or woven like chicken wire.

they used to do it in london a few years ago but i never seen out side of london but used to put a screed on it of about 25mm

They still sell the stuff at builders yards.
Been speaking to somone else and they said the tiler that did his house 13years ago used that method and his floors are still like they were laid yesterday.

If no one on here has tried it or can tell me the reasons why it no longer seems to be common practice looks like i might just go for the 12mm ply ontop of the floor boards.

more than likley died out due to a few failures or lack of people being able to do it right or cement sheet was cheaper but it does work well if done right expanding metal can also be used on walls to but is expensive

Cheers Jay. Still think i will go for the ply as there is more information available on that method.

brilliant stuff, we ued to use it years ago on the wooden floors before all the adhesive started coming in and then lay tiles in sand and cement [when tilers were tilers eh lol ].them were the days.

still do it from time to time very rare mainly to make up height diff in substrates as i said its expensive:8:

I used to lay tile onto wooden floors using expamet quite a lot years back.It was very sharp stuff when cutting with tin snips so sometimes a bit of claret here and there lol also multipe hammering of staples to fix it to the floor ..no gloves or knee pads hardly used!!!all health and safety issues these days suppose

By you must be searching the archives to go back 7 years.
On timber T&G you would put a waterproof building paper (membrane) down first to stop the moisture in the semi dry mix falling through the gaps.
Good thread and nice to read Jays input - sad days!

never realised until now was an older thread but nevertheless just fancied writing about the chicken wire days 🙂
