Free apprentice anyone?

yeh, i just spent £460 on tiling course and they only taught me the basics, figured i could learn the hard stuff by working for it instead of paying for it. good luck finding work

Ive done a bit of tiling before and paid 1100 quid for tiling inc natural stone and plastering , money well spent though and would spent it again in an instant from NETT 😉.

Hmmm, I'd love to help but I'm in the wrong part of the country - sorry chaps.

However, there has been many debates about whether you should work for free just to gain some experience. If you were to find an actual apprentiship scheme you would be paid. I think you should expect something in the way of wages, if only to cover your expenses..

I'm open to being shotdown by the other pros though, so wait for it

i have a friend who is a gas engineer who has taken on an apprentice and the college said that they have to be paid, even though the apprentice doesnt mind working for free. i dont mind working for free in my spare time if it means getting on the job training.

He was willing to go and pay for a training course and take no pay ,so working for free and gaining experience that he wont get at a training centre i think is perfectly acceptible , just my opinion.

Hi Jag,

We're too far apart for me to be able to do anything for you 😀 but I would certainly do so if I could. You have a good attitude and you'll do well once you gain some experience. Many years ago when I was a very young carpenter apprentice, and old timer took his extra time to teach me a lot of things that were useful in the trade. He was a WW2 vet, I was a real green bean, maybe only 20 years old, and it meant the world to me that he was teaching me.

He taught me how to use a tap and die set, and how to install commercial door units in block walls, how to build bookcases, how to cope crown molding, and a lot of other great stuff. Dave and Strumerman will appreciate this: this carpenter showed me how to use the framing square to cut rafters and stairs.

So, do what you have to do to get some experience, keep your eyes and ears open and take it all in......and if you find a guy that will teach you something then hold onto that experience as long as you can. There aren't many like Timeless John that will go out of their way to help a new man on the job.

Best of luck to you.
