Hi

Apoloigies if this questoin has already come through (2nd time of trying). I have got hold of some marble tiles (24"x 12" and 3/4" thick) to tile our new kitchen. The problem is the tiles are not designed, I think, for this type of use. They are bascially external marble as what I assume is the finished side is very rough to allow for good grip.

What I was hoping to do was to use the other side which is smoother but has a lot of blade marks in it from when it was cut. Does anyone have any advice as to what to use to grind and polish this down to a smoother finish. I think you can get diamond grinders with different grades and then finish off with a polish. Is this correct and if so can they be hired. Or is it a very specialised job that I need to get someone in to do. Any ideas how much this would cost. The floor is about 50m2. The tiles will be going down on to a new screed.

Would people agree that this is at least do-able?

Any advice greatly received.

Hi Dave,

Tried to upload some photos from PC but says the file is to big (5.5MB) so cannot. Now having had a proper look at it I am starting to think that the tiles may actually be granite rather than marble.

The rough side has a texture similar to that of a kerb stone (although not as rough as that of course. It also has that flakey look that granite has. Ignorance and general stupidity aside I think the same questions still apply - ie is it possible to get a finsh put on it and how much would something like this cost.

Thanks for the advice, always struggled with doing that. The picture below shows the smooth-ish underside. Not sure if you can still see the saw blade marks.

The picture below shows the texture. Again not sure if you can see this. The benefit of using this side is that the edges will of course be better.

Marble or Granite??

If you have any details of people that do this in my area that would be great, just to get an idea of price really. I live in south Kent (near Ashford).
