grout crumbling

Hi folks looking for some advice - builder has laid 9mm porcelain tiles which I bought from B & Q. They are laid on a timber floor sheeted with 6mm ply. He used porcelain adhesive and normal grout. Well a week later and movement in the tiles on the floor is causing the grout to crumble. He is due back on Tuesday any advice. I gather he should have used flexible grout and adhesive and 18mm ply?

BS states minimum 15mm, though there are better products out there ie hardie backer cement boards.
Which adhesive did he use ?
If you knock the tiles are there hollow spots ?

Yep,
few clues here as to what went wrong.

Is the tiling part of a larger building project?
or just a tiling job?
Did the builder employ a Tiler?
or did the 'Builder' tile it himself?

He maybe forgot to Pva the floor before tiling.... Hmmmm??

Thanks guys well he did PVA the floor and it is as part of a big project but it the tiles are laid on the original floor of the kitchen leading on to the extension. There are some hollow spots when knocking the tiles eek will the whole lot have to be lifted or is there an alternative?

Sorry Rosie, Charlie was being sarcastic. This problem of yours is all too a regular occurance on here.

Tilers don't use pva these days. There are specific primers (acrylic) that are used to prep. It may sound as though he has dotndabbed the tiles also.

im guessing at a refit.bu a tiler who will guarantee their work.

Hi Martyn it was laid on 6mm ply which was screwed down he used Nicobond tilers grey grout and Sovereign one part flexible Porcelain adhesive. Pics wouldn't help I don't think.

the 6 mm ply is no good either is the pva.it doesnt sound good at all to be honest

Rosie - don't think that flexible adhesive will solve the problem! And don't accept any thing but the whole lot up and redone. After a week you have this - its not going to get better only worse. A floating floor is weyroc/chipboard laid on insulation sheets.
