is this suitable for natural stone ? honed sandstone in particular

Never tried it on sandstone, I have on travertine that had been fully sealed , that worked ok . I would think though that its not a good idea with sandstone unless you were confident that it was fully sealed.
Grout rescue paint works great only glazed surfaces though especially going to a darker colour.
