Discuss Grouting Upto Bricks in the Tile Adhesive and Grout Advice area at TilersForums.com.

I have had to grout up to bricks in quite a few old houses, mainly floor tiling around fire hearths and kitchen wall tiling. I always put masking tape on the bricks then grout. Wait for the grout to harden up then remove the tape. You get dust from the bricks so you must wait for the grout to harden up.
