I tell you what, I'm 27 and have been involved in this trade for quite a few years in one way or another and I don't think even when I started some time ago that I heard anybody fitting slate (which is worse than stone if it's the type that's not equal thickness and you have to bed every tile perfectly) for less than £20m2.

Some of you have said above that he might find somebody to fit it at that rate.

I don't think even the cowboys out there would attempt to take on such a job at such a price. It can't be done.

No wonder he's behind time, he's probably had that many problems trying to avoid paying the going rate.

And I bet you he still had his holiday abroad at the end of it. I'd like to see if any of the guys he's worked with have managed to get a pint at the end of the week, let alone a holiday.

Walk away mate and tell who you can not to touch the builder with even a barge pole.

He's asking for mate's rates from a stranger. I would love to see what he's charging the customer for the same work. I bet his prices are lower and he's though 'oh no, I've done a Rodney and made a boo boo on this one, let's see if I can get some other sod to do it at that rate'.

Love the camels comment :hurray:

Wow. Let them have it fella. I'm sure they'll not last long in the trade, and I'm sure the customer will be getting their floor re-done much quicker than they should be. So the work will come back around some day mate.

Just never ever drop your prices due to undercutting, unless you know the going rate has been reduced in your area due to the climate. And I don't think it has in your case this time. Just keep heads-up on the competition which can be done by asking your customers what other prices they were quoted in loose conversation when you're tiling their walls/floors. I'm pretty sure you'll find all the jobs you get you got because of your skill/presentation/conversation/questions at quote stage, and never JUST price alone. Always remember that. :) The ones you don't get, you can be pleased to loose knowing they'll go to some good tiler one day and get a good job.

Having that conversation an awful lot in my neck of the woods at the moment..plenty of people turning up who 'do a bit of tiling' cos they've lost their usual job.
spoken to 2 customers this week alone who've had around the 15-20 per m mark quoted for natural stone.
Good thing is there's also a lot of remedial work coming my way where the same blokes are slung off the job halfway...no such thing as a free lunch!!
If we all hold out things will stabilise at some point..just difficult when people start flooding the area with silly prices and putting up awful work!!:incazzato::incazzato:
