I am new to the forum & wanted to say Hi. I have not long been trading as a handy man having started up my own part-time business. I also work part-time in one of the emergency control rooms. Pardon me if I'd rather not say which. Enough said... in between jobs I decided to strip back the sealant around my bath as it's looking black & mouldy in places. This turned into a much bigger job as I then found the tiled shelf that is attached to & runs along the side of the bath had, for some considerable time, been leaking & collecting water underneath. It's a bit complicated but after stripping off the tiles on the shelf it was a case of having to let it all dry out for a few days. In the meantime I decided that as it's all going to look fresh & new once the shelf part is sorted & new white sealant all around, maybe I would rake out the grout as this is discoloured in places & no longer comes clean. Oh boy! I hadn't realised what a ***** of a job this was going to be... In a few places I have managed to rake it quite deep but in others where the tiles seem to be much closer together I am only in about 1mm as the rake tool is catching the edge of the tiles. My question is: How deep do I need to rake it out in order for the new grout to take/bond? Any tips or advice would be appreciated.
I have heard of the various multi-tools that might help me with this growing project but Im not sure I can justify such a hefty purchase until my business is a little more established & I know Im going to get the use out of it but this manual way of doing it is driving me mad. I can see why tilers steer clear.
Apologies for such a long winded introduction.
