Help! Advice needed tiles on ply

The choice is yours at end of the day, if the tiles cracks or start to move at a later date then it will have to be replaced...

What adhesive did you use ?

Semi flexible rapid fitt I think it's called, definitely semi flex, I was told if I bought the 40 quid bad of bal it would have been fine. Wish hubby would have done his homework first. Nightmare. All I can think of is by a couple of extra packs and keep them in the garage so we can replace them if and when it happens. All I wanted was someone perspective whether they've seen this happen and how bad this will be for us etc. Lifespan and so forth

Life span is unknown but the adhesive isn't a cheap brand but sticks well.

I have never seen 6mm ply used to build up floors personally.

So many variables here! We've tiled hundreds of floors on 6mm ply in the past, but exactly that, in the past. However, if the ply is glued and screwed and primed you may be ok.. in your case. At least it's onto a solid floor and not 6mm ply onto floorboards etc. I would say whatever ply is still exposed, put as many screws as you can in. Horrible job into concrete but you want to prevent the ply from moving. Make sure the tiles are fitted with a solid bed of adhesive and Silicon all the perimeter edges rather than grout to absorb some movement.

If he has stuck the ply wood down extremely well and then stuck the tiles very well to the wood, you might get away with them not coming up, just some cracked grout lines probably.

I'm sorry but I wouldn't be going any further with that job.
You can glue thermal board to a screed but not 6mm ply.
That will fail, how long it will last is a guess but I would be cutting my loses just now.

Same as Stef, I would have stuck thermal boards down & wouldn't dream of tiling on any kind of ply full stop......it warps!.....it's just a problematic substrate but your choice

In my experience all of the methods that adhesive/grout manufacturers assure us are "suitable" for tiling on wood are assumed. There is no tried and tested method that has been standing for long enough to guarantee that info. Just the moisture drying from the adhesive is enough to make any wood expand and then contract weakening the bond and often "blowing" the tiles, no matter what primer or coverage or fitting method is used. I'm afraid it won't last long
