Hi all.

great forum and a great sense of commuinty amongst you tilers !

did training a couple of months ago and still a little bit concerned about going it alone. I am however about to do 1st job for a friend of a friend and just wanted to run by a couple of things with you guys just for re assurance !

I am going to be tiling a kitchen floor which is concrete it is very flat so does not need levelling. I believe I should be using rapid set adhesive (as ceramics tiles being used), a pva primer to stop any dust. And a flex grey floor grout.

please tell me if i'm wrong ! Also customer not going to have kickboards removed. no access required so is it ok to tile up to these leaving 4mm gap ??

I think and hope i am right but just seeking assurance. Welcome your comments and advice. Hi to brian c and teddyamy !

As usual spot on Tony,if the plinths have to be left on,after tiling blather some tilers mate (Silicon) down below joint against plinth, then grout over. This will help prevent grout against plinth cracking when the boards are kicked:wink_smile:

Hi all.

great forum and a great sense of commuinty amongst you tilers !

Hi and welcome to the community :)

did training a couple of months ago and still a little bit concerned about going it alone.

Don't worry about it too much, just pop on here and ask. There are loads of people on here in a similar position.

I am however about to do 1st job for a friend of a friend and just wanted to run by a couple of things with you guys just for re assurance !

I believe I should be using rapid set adhesive (as ceramics tiles being used), a pva primer to stop any dust. And a flex grey floor grout.

You just need to be using a cement based adhesive, doesn't have to be rapid setting. Mix in small bits and work to a square meter or so at a time.

You don't really need to PVA the floor. You can sprinkle a bit of water on the floor and then give it a good sweep and spread the adhesive on it directly with no primer.

You shouldn't really be going too heavy on the primer all the time, and shouldn't really be just using PVA when you do need a primer.

You may find taking the kickerboards off yourself and then tiling under them slightly gives you a break when you come to do those cuts as you don't need to be so perfect. Then trim the kickerboard down and pop it back on.

Again, welcome :)

thanks to everyone for advice i feel more confident already knowing people out there to help.

It is an old kitchen Tony and the plinths are screwed on.
thanks for the advice Gaz re Silicon 1st then grout.
How easy is it to cut plinths say for example like mine at home. They look like chipboard with the rubbish plastic wood looking finish. will this stuff just fall to bits if you attempt to cut ?

hi micky grout first then Silicon and yes they are chipboard either that or mdf but they will cut nicely either one sharp saw and cut from the front:)

great advice thanks. I agree that this will take pressure off a little for 1st job.

so if not using rapid set I should wait 24 hours before grouting ? is this right ?
GAZTIP why not mix dry,50/50 rapid and standard set adhesive to take the pressure off, this will give you time but will still accelerate the drying/working time.....I would only advise the mix from the same manufacturer...after all its the same base product!
