I spread it in one direction, always have. The only time I use the flat side of my trowel though is to spread the back of large format tiles or do a bit of screeding.

This was how I was taught to do it and always have done. Not too easy on the last few though lol.

Same as tts for me, my teacher darren taught me that way years ago! On walls, I allways spread with the flat end of the trowel 1st in an upward motion then comb from the side. Floor needs to be perfect though!
