how many use a gauge rod

all these how many threads has got me wondering

how many of you set out with a gauge rod

i find them handy but a pain to make them for every different size of tiles and grout widths

ive seen tape measures used to great effect but my own mental arithmatic can sometimes be a little faulty

I do for quite a few jobs.
Don't see how it's a pain. Used to use wood and sand old marks off - now I use a length of uPVC and wipe my marks off.

thats a handy hint

i use wood and make anew one for every size and keep the old one

i sometimes use them in the veg plot to mark out rows

i like the visual aspect of the rod , i can see the cuts and adjust accordingly

I do most of the time. use a bit of masking tape along the rod then just replace when you need to make new marks.

I do use a 'staff' from time to time depending on the tile and job size, but usually just a tape.

we call them story rod's , because they tell you the story of how you want to set out i like to see what going on , sometimes with them!!:lol:

I use a tape measure 99% of the time, but sometimes use a gauge for 10x10s in kitchens

tape measure for me 99% of the time and then just mark on the wall/floor where the last full tile comes too so i can see the size of cut adjacent on the next wall etc.
or i move the tile along the substrate adding the tile amounts and then x it by the grout joint width so i can mark the position of the last full tile.

Each to their own ways, if you use a gauge and you feel more confident then keep using it. I use my tape but I did use a gauge many years ago.

Use a gauge for walls....but a tape measure for floors - No idea why, can't say that I'd ever thought about it before answering this post.... may I've got some weird spacial awareness issue!:yikes:
