tape for me, lay tile down with spacer or a couple of tiles maybe 3 or 4 then mark on wall. never used a gauge.

a tape measure works for me but there are times when a gauging stick is really useful when you have a few obstacles on one particular wall and the visual side of things does make more sense than the maths even though they work out the same if you get my drift.. 'a case of the view reveals more than the distance'...

I was only ever taught setting out with a tape, so that's all I use. As Dom said, "Each to their own", there's no right or wrong way IMO.

Each to their own, but I have used a staff as I call it. To set out floors anywhere from 1,100m2 to 3,500m2 never let me down. If it works for big jobs, it will work on a splash back.

I use both , it really depends on the tile and the layout.

The stick is much quicker and accurate on big walls

everbody is differant tho, some ppl like to grid, use spacers and whatnot

i 'walk' a tile either along a wall or floor following the datum line, count the number of full tiles then when i come to the end of the wall and cant get a full tile in i move the tile forward according to how many grout lines there are and thats where the cut will be. Takes seconds. its not so easy on large format heavy suckers tho! like trying to walk a St Bernard!!:smilewinkgrin:

I think a gauge rod lets you mess around with your starting position more and makes it quicker to decide full tile half tile start from the centre etc Also mirroring your cuts and if you have a lot of obstriuctions it makes it very easy to check.

Sometimes moving your start position 5mm will make a big difference with the look and how easy it is to tile.

Always tape and a calculator ........I was taught you should never have a tile cut less than half the tile you are using so simple.
