How much adhesive to use

Hi there, we are re-tiling our bathroom, putting new tiles over existing tiles. We have put primer on and are wondering if it is better to lay a bed of adhesive on the existing tiles on the wall or can we just put blobs of adhesive on the back of the new tiles? Tiles are 600 x 300, 10mm deep.

TBH, I would not put a tile of that size on top.

They will be heavy and your tiling is only as good as the base they are going onto. Do it right in the first place and you will have no problems.

As all of the above, Can you tell us what "Primer" you used please?

if the tiles are 10mm porcelain about 24kg/m2 then they will be heavy for overtiling and for tiling onto plaster, you will need to have bare plaster board or a tile backer board, max weight - plaster is 20kg/m2, and for bare plasterboard 32kg/m2, tile backer boards about 40 kg/m2 on top of the tile weight allow about 5kg/m2 for adhesive and grout.

And regardless of tiling on tile (which is a no-no,especially with that size tile)dont put blobs on the back of tiles ,you need as much coverage on the back of tile as possible and should be using a cement based adhesive (not ready mixed tubbed stuff)If your planning on doing this as a diy job have a serious re-think,it would take a pro 2-4 days to do it right and would take a diy-er 2-4 weeks to do it wrong.
