compression joint on copper is sometimes the best and only options in certain tight places, and or near joists...and commonly used in plumbing so you cant judge on that..but certainly the waste...I never use compression under or above..of course on traps you have no choice .

The times I use a compression joint or rather I HAVE to is maybe 100-1 (excusing valves etc). I can't see any reason for using compressions in the pictures given, other than the guy can't solder and he has never used solvent weld. So sadly my point still stands, that is no plumber!

, but they are acceptable practices...what isn't..having done my city and guilds in carpentry and joinery many moons ago, is cutting into joist, as what ever you cut reduces the joist strength by that amount, reducing its stress capabilities..but this has happened in so many houses i've been to its scary. I even seen a 5' soil pipe cut into an 8x2 joist. We were told that if you have to cut make it as close as possible to where the joist is ether supported by a supporting wall or hanger. and if possible drill a hole not cut a slot... Ive not yet come across a bath thats landed in the kitchen yet though. but i digress and we are getting into the realms of thecarpentry forums, and this is the tile forum ;o)
