how to build a bath panel

does anyone else build a bath panel as such ?

if you need access how do you get to it ?

the tile on the left is the access panel and the left hand joint is silicone you can see on the top pic the cut in the plaster board

ive only done one since i started, and worry about access so I made a frame from 68mm cls. plasterboard then tile. its not flush like yours but with a 35-40 mm lip but gives it body, rather than flush. its heavy but comes of in one lump, silicon all round with small wedges behind silicone, told customer how, if it needed to come off for access to cut silicone, cut small wedges and lift out, but mind your toes!. but would like to hear how anyone else does it

that one sits back 5mm from the bath edge so wont get water on it if you need to access it just cut the joint with a blade only one cut tile

ah I see, nice one, will remember that, also like the way you matched up grout line with floor, I couldnt do it on mine as didnt have enough tiles, the customer worked for porcelnosa, and it was end of line job lot, used every little bit !

Jamie once you siliconed it it will hold about 2 ton lol

i use the magnet system and the silicone also for the edges

the magnet system ian is 4 magnets for the back...either schluter or genesis both do one,you would probably need a few packs for a tile that size

Jamie why ? i have never needed a magnet for a bath panel

i prefer using them,keeps the tile in situ while the silicone is drying also

sometimes my access panel willbe a single tile maybe a 600 by 300 tile which is 1 tile of the floor so the magnets woudl be of good use then to hold tile in place tioll silicone cures

i dont do that i leave the board fixed and cut a hole which is slightly smaller than the tile size and use the magnet system on the edges of the hole to fix the single tile

i can see the benefits of your bigger removable peice but say it was smaller tiles brick effect it wouldnt work do you know what im trying to say lol

I do my panels pretty much the same way as you pjc. and yes i use a wedge until silicone has cured. pain in the backside when you get a cradle leg set like the one in the photo.

i have also done a panel with bevelled edge brick bond tiles and that was a tad harder to do but still the same principle.

yes its only as big as you want it you dont have to use the plaster board and yes i done it with brick tiles and even bricks slips

I like the schluter magnets. I'd use a tile backerboard for the rest of the panel.

well i am poor cant afford backerboard where it not needed and magnets lol

But you don't pay for it, the customer does. The kind of movement a bath gets, and the risk of it getting wet would always be backerboard for me. It would add less than a tenner to the job.
