How to prep broken plaster?

Got a bathroom wall to tile next week with bits of the old plaster coming off. Top skim in some parts and down to brickwork in others. The wall's not all that bad but what's the best way to prep before tiling with ceramic tiles 75 x 50mm?

Strip it all down and have it replastered. At least with new plaster you can be sure of a more sound surface. Remember to allow it to fully dry first. Alternatively you could strip it down and glue up some plasterboard for a much better surface.

Is there any alternative to plasterboard or plastering? Can it be filled with something like easi fill and tiled onto???

You could fill the holes with rapid set but if some of the plaster is coming away then I would be worried tiling over it!

The plaster came away with the old tiles, but most of the wall seems ok, no other loose bits. If it was up to me I'd have reboarded with backerboard, but it isn't.

Just been looking at Thistle hardwall plaster...would this be any good?

I would use rapid set adhesive to patch but depend how big the holes are

Holes aren't too deep, maybe 5mm at most in places. If I did use rapid set could I prime with sbr?

I use acrylic primer but I think sbr would be ok

Don't use Hardwall, you would need to use Thistle Bonding for small areas of making good but brush the area with sbr first to stop any suction from the back ground...

could be wrong,but i dont think you can tile on thistle bonding.

You can if you put a finish on the undercoat but it's the drying times that can cause any delays...

If it's only a few small areas bonded in then it will be OK to tile onto if it's primed a couple of times. Different story if it's a whole wall.
