Been to look at a job today.Huge brewery thats being converted into accomodation and offices. About 1000m of 60 x 60 granite to lay, mainly floors but a bit on walls.Anyway, quite excited about it,got there...what a let down.
Think site staff were polish, they had started some floor tiling(done a fair bit actually) and wanted labour prices only for us to continue on different floors/ finish areas theyd started.
Absolute baffoons, masterclass in how not to tile. Those tiles and the amount required must have costs thousands upon thousands.
Firstly, theyd NAILED chipboard to the floor joists,1 nail in each corner of board.
2. tiles were dot and dabbed, could actually get my hand under them in some cases.(when i questioned this he said, theyre thick tiles they wont break.
3. 70+ metre corridors with tiles butted up,1 mm joints in some cases
4. no expansion joints
5.Theyre going to plasterboard then skim walls and put these tiles onto that. With pva i may add.
6. Have you sealed these already down? why do we need to do that.
Must admit, i looked at the addy/grout on site and to be fair it was flexible!! albeit a polish brand i believe judging by bag details.Never heard of the brand.
Walked out and said to my partner, forget it.Gotta send company an email now with my price/m.
Explained what was needed to site manager and apparently budget wont stretch to that.
Really is a massive shame because it would have been a nice job that should have paid well and keep me busy for a while.
Reckon somebodies in for the high jump when the proverbial hits the fan.:mad2:

Drives you batty doesnt it! What can you do?

I had to turn work down today and I would have liked the job but the moron running the place wanted me in there tomorrow and was not willing to believe that laying marble onto chipboard is a bad idea because his mate that does a bit of tiling says its fine. I was so angry for about 10 mins and then thought "stuff em". There is nothing you can do with people like that.

Gonna tell em to keep me on file, and let me do any future prep work.Judging by their website they are property developers who specialise in listed buildings and bespoke interior designs so maybe 1 for the future
unfortunately you'd probably not get any prep work off them as these so called 'moron tilers' would do it for half your price as they'd be cutting every corner possible

I doubt they will do it right next time round mate.

They sound like the 'in and out' type to me. They get in there and do everything as quickly and cheap as possible and dont worry about job lasting, as long as it lasts long enough to sell they will probs be happy. Ive worked for that type in the past.
