has anyone used the inspection hatch that you can incorporate into a bath panel? brilliant idea, i done about 10 now, they can be made as big as you like and after tiling they are virtually invisible but simply pop out on a magnetic catch if any maintenance needs to be done to pipes etc

A lot of hassle and eventually a problem.
magnetic catches can be such a pain.
Panels can bow.
I put customers off the idea and reccommend a plastic type panel

the panel cannot bow if its a piece of 12mm marmox which is completely water resistant, plastic panels are naff in a expensively tiled bathroom, i think they are a great idea, i have used them with mosaics and you just cannot see the join, try them:25:

Copy that. Even made them out of marine ply and stuck stone on them.

have made panels out of plasterboard for the last 25 years just cut the inspection panel on a full tile or tiles 20mm smaller than the tiles then siicone the joint

Just done a plywood false wall for two basins, tiled the front completely then when it had set I cut out one whole tile, including the ply, with my fein multimaster then popped it back in with a couple of small battens behind to stop it falling in. Silicon the joints and bobs yer uncle.

I found ply can warp if you tile one side as it will be unbalanced

ok,ok...... it seems that the concesus of Have recentlyopinion is in favour of tiling panels ! I got to agree that a removable panel is fine. The problems come when the entire panel has to be removable. supporting framework has got to be substantial to counteract the tendency of plywood to bow. Last panel I used Wedi board...may have found the solution........

I have used Lux and Wedi board. Has Hardibacker got the same cross section and construction ,or is it something completely different ?

Hardie is very similar to the old asbestolux...but obviously no asbestos..unlike the others it has no insulation wafered,it is purely cement board...totally waterproof ....Gaz

Came across a sheet of cementious board once...it was HEAVY,bowed and would not flex. I assume that this description does not apply to hardibacker?
