large format tiles more than 10mm thick and more than 3 metres from the floor will have to be mechanically fixed to the wall!

no brian - somthing i heard today from a master tiler, something thats going to be in the new specs apparently. (but 3m would take this above a house design i have in a stairway area - not an issue now but might be in future for me). More a tec question - Im a learner ref many of these issues.

building regulations would be the best people to contact about this i think,always lots of rumours flying around though.

i spoke with the guy who helps write the specs, he showed me on his laptop, he even explained to me how to do it (me being a 'retired' engineer an all that). I found it interesting, something i never thought about. I have a mate who builds what can only be described as mansions (i hope to do some work with him) and for a future project idea of mine i will also need to know this. I have a balcony at height on current project that if tiled at the walls (its not) would be effected. hummm - i dunno, so thought i would bounce it around here, because in honesty its easier not to tile above that height in the first place if i dont need to even though i have some funky design ideas.

There are some road tunnels on the A50 that are tiled extensively throughout their structure, I worked on part of them years ago, just after opening a section of tiles fell off hitting some cars below, the height was about 12 mts I think, We did not use any type of mechanical fixings and the tiles were fairly heavy, pilks if I remember correctly, and before anyone asks, no, it was not my section that fell. How are they fixed mechanically? I am trying to work that one out, surely not screwed? I will guess at some sort of frame to hold them as a failsafe?

:20::20:

diamond - yes they are screwed! .... a side slit is cut / ground into the side egde / corner egde of the tile (like putting buscuits into a worksurface) the edge of a washer is pushed into the slit (and an adjoining tile slit i guess) and a screw is put through the washer into the wall, thus retaining one or more tile edges! Then grouted over and hidden. Apparently there is a company that already specialises in these edge cuts but there must also be some way of cutting these on-site too. (hope i described that well as it was described to me - love to hear from an expert here - its an interesting little subject) ... Im in 'being educated mode' so if someone wants to correct me, then please do, thx.

after mucho searching - here it is! this is how you do it! :hurray: ...

Fyi forum peeps (I just thought I could be misinterpreted ref my last posting)
I have sent pjc a pm.

If any of you has a unique idea (it has to be unique) to solve a problem (i.e. its commercially required / there may be demand) and if you show that idea to the public (and on this forum / on the www would defo do that) then you lose all rights to patent that idea! (with all the financial implications that involves, i.e. you could have made money from it and now anyone can use YOUR idea to THEIR financial advantage) :thumbsup:

write it all down, pictures, dates etc and then post recorded delivery back to yourself, the envelope is stamped and its a basic form of copyright, dyson did it after speaking to an ex colleauge of his who he thought was trying to steal an idea, I read about it in one of his books.
