We have a kitchen studio in North Manchester and want to tile the whole 2300 sqft in a 600 / 600 porcelin tile. We have a problem with the landlord, he will not allow us to rip up the laminate flooring currently down. I was wondering if there is a matting that can be tiled onto in order to hold everything together as a floating floor. I know its a no no but its a shop and normal rules may not need to apply. Or do they??

Thanks Paul

Time's Ran Out

I think the landlords right.
It's his property and if he allows a permanent alteration and you or another of his tenants 'move out'/go out of business without putting the property back to it's original decor, then he will have additional costs.
As all these restrictions would have been in your original agreement so I don't see it being an issue - his word will be final.

Oh! - :welcome:.

Although to answer your original question - you could certainly roll out an uncoupling membrane loose laid, and tile direct to that.
Whether it would a satisfactory solution, with only the weight of tile and adhesive keeping it down would be a question. However we have used a membrane(building paper) in a showroom area previously for display purposes but only in small areas.
I have seen a system offered by Porcelanosa of a grid framework with the tiles loose laid and ungrouted.

Good Luck.

One Day

The Porcelanosa system of dry-fixed tiles is brilliant and would do the job, but it's pricey. (Was used for the royal wedding this year)

Tiling onto laminate even with Ditra or such is VERY risky. Laminate floors usually have too much deflection.

You will of course find plenty of willing "tilers" in Manchester who would do this for you.
If you want to see the kind of resulting job you would get though, check out the mezanine of New Look at Deepdale Retail Park in Preston. (It needs condemning!)

hi there everyone and salutations to all from new zealand.what a very good thing that is happening here.i've enjoyed the banter going to and fro and i must say what an informative people you are.we dont seem to have such a website down in nz there is of course the aust. forums not too far away.i've been having a look at whats going on in our world of tiling lately. due to a serious workplace accident my career path has taken a very sharp corner and towards a very different direction, and now find myself off the tools and in a position of taking care of those on the tools. so here i am soaking up as much as i can that will benefit some of the guys over here.
thats enough of me then. i saw this thread and was thinking about this particular situation. installing a temporary tiled surface on a showroom floor.in doing so i came across a couple of links in a us tile forum that might be useful TAVY Tools, broken link removed be worth a look but i was thinking why the owner of the building wouldnt want the floor upgraded maybe he doesnt realise or appreciate how good it will look when finished.a suggestion then might be to take him to a place that has a large tiled area that looks a million bucks. you never know it might be enough to change his mind.then if thats not enough offer to tile a small area where the laminate flooring is crappy and somewhere that is practical for you if he still refuses.once he sees it down in his building it might just be enough to turn him.its worth a crack other wise a temp floor over dodgy laminate might be an expensive risk to take whatever you do i hope it all goes well for you:thumbsup:
