wivers,i know what you are saying and i have made comments recently regarding losing out etc due to the same circumstances. To be honest bud...ITS EVERY MAN FOR THEMSELVES AT THE MOMENT.

Personally i have passed on 2 plastering jobs this week and a decorating job...and i am seriously thinking about rectifying that situation.

wivers

some of us have spent many years of our life at college learning various trades, if we had put the same time into a profession rather than a trade we would be paid considerably more

please dont insult us by calling us jack of all trades when we are genuine qualified multi trades

you are generally being undercut by unqualified building operatives who untill recently were working on site and when site work picks up they will return to it leaving the domestic market to those that understand it

Jack of all trades was a turn of phrase i used to describe builders and plumbers in my area turning their hand to tiling.

Do you advertise as a jack of all trades?

If not then i do not see how this turn of phrase can insult you?

If you are a master craftsman and skilled in many trades then this thread is obviously not aimed at you and therefore shouldn't have offended in any way!

We should have a tilers strike. All of us get our food out the cupboards and all meet in a field in tents and sit there for a week or two while all the tiles get fitted by numpties who have sooooo many problems they all run off leaving you to go back with real prices on real jobs.

Orrrr that could backfire and we all get so sozzled for two weeks we forget where we live and how to tile leaving numpties to get good and steal all our work for 1p per meter.

ok mate , i take your point..................you werent having a pop at me

im getting sick of the whole situation and getting a bit crotchety

i find advertising a list of assorted trades counterproductive so tend not to advertise at all

we went through this same process about 10 years ago , theres nothing you can do stop being undercut by idiots

you have to offer a superior service that the others cant compete with

and then get personal reccomendation where your the only one pricing the job

this takes time to build up but its the only way to survive against those that are working for thirty quid a day and a bannana

i totally see your point wivers but I think the best way to combat this it to gain alliances. If you recommend others i.e plumbers, plaster, chippy's then they will scratch your back. so when you dont get a job (you said lost but in all honesty it wasn't yours to begin with mate or was it?) hopefully your have more chances of gaining one from them.

lets do it in October, when all those nipple shaped mushrooms are out!!!:hurray:magic

anyone for special tea?

it'd be a "fun guy" time

As weird as it sounds. If all PROFESSIONAL ESTABLISHED TILERS took their annual two-week holiday at the same time (and in the UK - as I like to support UK and UK only right now) I bet you'd find the 'correction' of jobs would come rolling in a couple of months after, and the 1p per meter tilers would be hiding somewhere I bet too.

I agree mate, I wasn't offended in any way mate, I know the point you were trying to make, just trying to make an argument for some of us boys out there.

I get called 'Jack of all trades, master of none all the time' by many people (not my customers though:lol:) and take it as it's ment
