I have a meeting tomorrow, and I just want someone to clear what my own thoughts are on this.

Walls are 6m high....substrate is blockwork and then 12mm marine ply over the top. Limestone...large format over the top of this...Its going to be mechanically fixed, but something just flashed up in my head about the load bearing, I dont think the wall will take this weight. Time for the struct engineer I think...or shall I get the corbal plates put into the block work? Or perhaps even go for unistrut? Thats a lot of stone to come tumbling down.

Can backboard not be used and mechanically fixed over 3 mtrs in height as bs 5385 states..

Its the load bearing on that blockwork, its worrying me. I did run through the backboard scenario and Im not convinced that this will help so much. Dave I think its time to call in the engineer isent it? Either that or put it on uni-strut. This is a massive area, better to be safe than sorry.

It sure is but ply isn't suitable even if you mechanically fix it.

You need to make sure they do it to spec.

why ply it or backer board it ? just fix straight on to the block work ,i would use toggle fixings and dowel pins and use a chemical fixing into the block work, the toggle fixings are normally made out of flattened stainless bar with 3mm holes punched in them, prime the block work with 2 coats of sbr primer and solid bed fix with white spf adhesive

run away as fast as possible if these mistakes are made from drawings up you have a big problem

regs here are it must be mechanically fixed with stainless steel fixings, the fixing must be 10mm from the face and back edge of the stone i believe wire fixing is not allowed over 3m high so corbel plates ,toggles or rail systems are often used

If any doubt throw it back to the architect/engineer to check, that's what they're paid for...or is it design and build? If it is, don't you need to submit calcs anyway?

Thats a hell of a wall! Is it just a single flat wall? Cavity or double skin blocks tied together?

(If its single skin id run really really fast in the opposite direction)

Concrete blocks should be ok but i would imagine it would need a pier behind it to hold that weight at that height?

I have just had my gable ends built in concrete blocks (3.6N) on the inside skin and they are 4 metres and moved like you wouldnt believe. (Even with the roof tied into it)

I still got loads of time to sort this one out, I havent ordered the next shipment of stone for it yet. Its a lunatic of a wall, the surveyor is out there tomorrow, to give it a once over. I think the strut engineer will have to come in and advise. We start the floor shortly so I'll take photos as we go along.
Im looking forward to this one...havent felt this way about a job in ages.
