Girlfriend do'es the books thru the the year and see my accountant once a year has saved me a fortune, He ask's me if I've got any cash, And allway's say how much do you want, Get a blank look, No sence of humour.

Hi, I do my own day to day accounts. I use Microsoft Excel and spend about 30 mins a day on it. If you don't keep up to them, it can get on top of you. I keep all my Invoices, fuel receipts etc. At the end of the year, I pass on my details to my accountant, which he then charges me £400 for the pleasure of putting in my Tax Form. I have often woundered if I could put my own Tax form in to save money. I would be intersted to learn how much he does save me in my tax bill? I see my accountant one a year only! Jeff

yr lucky he charged me 700 this year am sacking him tho ..looking for a new one who duznt drive a bmw x5!!!

I just spent half a day on a workshop entitled "Becoming Self-Employed" Its run by HM Revenue & Customs. It was very informative and of course makes the TAX returns process look very easy. I got the impression that HMRC want you to do your own returns (I wonder why! ) We discussed keeping records, Motor expenses, Capital allowances, Sef assessment, National insurance contributions, Tax returns. I honestly enjoyed myself. Didn't mind being there as I'm waiting for a wall to dry :yes:

if there one bit of advice i can give all you guys its!!!!!!!!
get an accountant asap

one inland revenue investigation will cost you well over a grand
and most self employed tilers / builders get investigated every 10 years or so

I once spoke to a barber who said he got investigated by the inland revenue. They charged him £250 a day while they investigated a sum of money that had appeared in his bank months ago that he couldn't account for. Turned out it was a refund from the tax office....
