And on another note GRUMPY GROUTER yes it does take longer to tile with100x100 than 200x200 but if thts your logic do you charge less for 300x300 than you would for 200x200?
I charge kitchens and bathrooms on day rate. As yet not been asked to put 300x300 on to the kitchen walls. Most of my work is small scale and rarely is of benefit for me to charge at a metre rate. I charge the number of days that I think it should take, if I over run, which I quite often do for various reasons, I absorb the extra time at my own expense. So following your question, if I was fixing 300x300 instead of 200x200 and it would take me less time, then yes I would charge less.

Thankyou for the response grumpy but it does seem to me looking back through all threads and posts i have made that you do like to contradict me or chastize my input although i am a tiler i still have feelings.....:bigcry:
Sorry you feel that way smurf, though I don't recall chastizing or contradicting you, I was mearly asking questions about some of your responses for my own clarification. Each tiler has his/her own methods and ways, and each tiler will work at a different speed. I am quite new to the trade and am very keen to learn as much as I can. I can only do this by asking questions and getting experience. I am not the fastest tiler in the world, nor will I ever be, as that is just the way I am, but I try to do the best job I can. Most of my work comes by way of referrals now so my pricing can not be too far out otherwise I wouldn't get the contacts. Wasn't contradicting nor chastising, but i do know that sometimes I can write things that can be misinterpreted, but that is not intentional.

Matthew, I'm tiling a kitchen tomorrow. The same layout as the one you are quoting for. It's 5sqm and it's 4 boxes of white and one box of brown tiles. I'm doing it for £250 inc mats & trim. I expect it to take 2 days. However, my days are usually very long (typically 10+ hours). I am now into month 16 of being a tiler and I price a job based on what a 'time served' tiler would charge. i.e. if I think a time served tiler would tile a room in 2 days I would charge 2 days, but it may take me 3 or 4 days. Saying that, I am getting faster and faster each job I take on. There are plenty of threads on here regarding pricing and how long jobs should take. Good luck. Sean

Some interesting points, from both sides. I have a question or 2 for the 'faster' fixers, lets say you the OP's splashback, break down your fixing / finishing time in days and events, not asking for an hourly breakdown, just what you would hope to accomplish by the end of days 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 ......... etc
Thanks.

Matthew, £300 does sound about right, but as you are in your first year as a tiler it might take you 3 days to complete. The main thing is to win the job on a reasonable & competitive quote. Then you can practice (and get paid for it). Due to my situation I was able to absorb a very low daily rate (sometimes as little as £40 a day). I wanted and needed the tiling practice.......the small wage I received was a bonus. Other peoples circumstances are different, but while we are learning the trade we have to make sacrifices, whether it be money, time, inconvenience, away from the family etc. As mentioned previously I completed my 5sqm splashback & window & small wc splashback job today. I charged £250 inc mats, but it was a hard 10 hour first day with 6 hours on day 2. So £112 a day for labour (minus tax). When I first started out as a tiler I knew I would take time to earn £150 (labour) a day. Saying that I very often hear about other trades earning a minimum of £200 a day. I now feel very confident that on my next job I will be quoting very close to that £150 mark. Cheers Sean

Whilst i do sometimes work my prices out by day rate, most of my work I price by what the job is worth. For maybe the first 7 years of trading I would aim to get a minimum wage per day, safe to say I got nowhere. One day I sat down and worked out what my job entails - The constant purchase of tools, my knowledge of properties, my design skills, my product knowledge, my time spent doing quotes, money spent on advertising, the list goes on! Surely this must have some worth over and above a wage.

The day I stopped thinking of myself as being 'self employed' and started to treat it as a 'business' was the day my 'Business' started to grow due to the extra money I was charging.

Working for somebody else, or site work is chargeable by the day but I think some of you guys don't realise how talented you are and deserve to be paid for it

Thanks for your wee peptalk! It is good to work out the pay backwards and find a nice dayrate after all the expenses have been paid. Otherwise it isn't worth it - still wondering how people can work for about £10sqm as there can't be much left for fuel, insurance, tax/NI (not that you pay much tax of £10  ) Not to mention promotion as business cards etc
So you are SO right about treating the jobs as a business - the only way forward.
Much appreciated! :hurray:

Hi verona
there are alot of tilers out there at the minute taking what they can get for whatever they can get , But as far as £10m2 goes it depends on what your tiling personaly i dont charge less than £18m2 but if its a commercial property for example eg 350m2 open expanse shop floors 30m2 perday should take 11 /12 days thats nearly £300 per day so £10 m2 would be agood earner at price that will seal the deal. Each job imo has to be taken on its merits thats why i allways charge by the M2 and take the good with the bad if you charge a job by dayrate at 3 days for example and it only takes two you lose a days money but if you charge it at m2 if it takes two...bonus

You are right about charging £10 per m2 on 350m2 if it is straight forward, but it is smaller domestic jobs were I find it impossible to lower the price to that for small jobs where you usual know if taking 1 or 2 days.
