Say were boarding 12mm ply on wooden floor boards. Do you screw into the joists or just the floorboards ??? And what size scews do you usually use if you screw into floorboards only. Asking coz i know theoretically its more rigid screwing into the joists but theres always a risk of screwing into a pipe !

Into the floorboards, making sure you add the thickness of ply to 3/4 thickness of the floorboards, and using screws to match the total thickness, meaning you shouldn't have to worry about pipeworks under the floor, cos your screws shouldnt be getting there.

Though I'd always look at screwing the floorboards to the joists first to see if this tightened up the floor enough, then ply.

ahaaa, thought thats the easiest option...but i knw i've read a lot of ppl saying to screw into the joists on the forum. So wanted to knw who does what, lol so i can decide on what i should do....

Adam has it spot on...always well secure your boards to the joists, and replace any rotten ones before laying your ply.....Gaz

should there be a slight gap between ply boards to allow for expansion, if so how many mm is recomended

cheers

You should, apparently, also prime the underside and edges of the board before fitting too!

Grumpy

when fixing down floor boards to joists look for existing fixings and screw down close to these so as to minimise chance of going through pipes etc hope this helps, if not then ignore it and go back to enjoying your friday night:thumbsup:

Hi
I was told to apply PVA glue on to floorboards before puting down the plywood (filling washing up liquid bottle with PVA) squirt over lay down ply then screw every 6 inches.

Just what i was told and it seems to work for me.

Cheers

You can use wood glue yes!!..but it is just overkill but won't hurt at all if it makes you feel it does the job better....but screws will do the job just fine....as well...

I have always glued and screwed ply down...........as Dave said..........

Overkill..........but YOU know its done
