Laying porcelain tiles outside

Hi all
i intend to lay porcelain tiles externally to form a patio, the tiles will be large format 600 x 600mm probably, should I use an under tile mat such as ditra ? And what is the best way to bed the tiles some suggest troweling adhesive on the back of the tile and then bedding them on sand and cement.
what suggestions can you offer.

Hi jeff and welcome... what are you intending to tile onto and how big an area is it.?
