Daveyboy

I recently posted a thread in the Adhesive, grouts, etc forum regarding a contract I have just got doing tiling works in the local leisure centre. Well, I started tonight and thought I'd share with you the experience!

The grout in two of the shower cubicle floor tiles had cracked and water was getting in underneath. We had been told that the tiles had been tiled on top of existing tiles and I assumed that the original tiles might have failed thus causing the cracking in the grout.

When we got up close to the tiles, there was a really disgusting smell and drain flies would swarm around us :yikes::yikes🙁I'm itching/scratching just reliving the memory!) We could see that the original gulley tiles had been left in and the new tiles laid on top of the old and butted up to the gulley tiles, with grouting along the edges. We could see crack lines along the grout

When we lifted the tiles, the stench was unbearable! We scraped off the old adhesive and as we were washing down, the gulley started backing up. So we lifted the waste trap and found it full of congealed rotting skin flakes, pubic hair, hair and God knows what else.:incazzato: :yikes: The good news is that the old tiles are rock solid and we keyed them ready for over tiling.

So, aside from the fact that the tiling was not the best I've come across, because the staff did not regularly clean out the trap, water laid in the gulley and eventually crept in between the old tiles/new tiles, causing the new tiles to lift and the grout to crack :mad2::mad2::mad2:

In the end, we were told to lift the tiles in all the cubicles and the upstands and try to source some new ones...

Anyone know where I can get very high slip resitant tiles, terracotta style that are immediately available??

Now that just makes me feel so much better off.

Just a quick progress update....

Re the non-slip floor tiles, Gary the Tiler has given me a contact for a supplier, which I will progress tomorrow. Also, when I went into my local tile shop, there was a tile rep there who could also supply special-to-order tiles, so he is going to get me some samples and give me a cost for producing/supplying matching floor tiles (the originals are long discontinued).

Today, we re-laid the anti-slip floor tiles that we managed to recycle, together with some spares the staff found in their store cupboard. We bought some similar looking floor tiles and used them as the upstands (they don't need to be non-slip).

We used Topps RSF grey and I have to say, it mixed and went down really well. The local Topps manager confirmed he would supply it at £9.97 incl VAT over the phone. When I went it to buy 10 bags of the RSF grey, he said I had to fill in a trade application form, which I duly did. He then said that'll be £350 (or thereabouts) to which I say, "Err NO, you told me it was £9.97 a bag". "Ah", he said, "yes but before you can have it at that price, you have to make a minimum of two purchases". :incazzato: "Err NO" I said and started to leave. "Hang on" he said, "I'll just check with head office", he was back within a minute saying they had agreed I could have it for £9.97 a bag, so £99.70 it was and a saving of £250...

We used Mapei ultracolour anthracite grout @ £16.76 a 5kg bag (local tile shop), which has matched in well with the original grout

Tomorrow, we will do the siliconing up. We are going to be using a silicon called CT1, which apparently can be applied on wet surfaces, even under water!! It's odourless, doesn't shrink, can be painted, no solvents, no isocyanates (???) unique flexibility, excellent resistance to chemicals, antifungal, prevents bacteria growth, UV resistant and excellent resistance to vibration. Certainly ticks all the right boxes so will let you know if it lives up to its claims.....

It seems that Topps try this on a regular basis. Something similar was tried with me a while ago. Like you I argued my case and the guy buckled.

Another time I may just carry on walking out of principle.
