As the guys above have suggested. Whilst ply has many pluses in strength and rigidity, when it comes to tiling the two things that run against it are expansion and contraction and delamination.

Back in the day I constructed a rugby club shower room using Aquapanel in 2400x1200x12.5 sheets. They weighed the best part of 40KG a sheet and would collapse under their own weight if not handled by 4 people.

That's why you don't find it that size any longer.

The 1200x900 sheets are just fine, it means you need a bit more framework and a few more noggins where the joins are but it then give you nearly 50kg/m2 of fixing structure, which is just where you want to be for stone. And the big plus is it's not effected by moisture and has no expansion issues at all.

Thank you all for your advice I really appreciate it - I have managed to find a supplier of marmox tile backer who will ship here to me & will hold 60kg.

Now you've all prevented me from killing anyone with the tiles coming off on their heads, please could you answer my other stupid questions:

(1) Would you recommend a particular spacing - advice seems to vary from 2mm - 5mm

(2) Adhesive thickness - seems to be 3mm would be ok? (I know I've got the right adhesive cos I downloaded the manufacturere spec - Norcros white flexi)

(3) what size of square notched adhesive trowel do I need - 6mm or 10mm or other

thanks for your patience
