Steve, It seems that where I live it's cheaper to lay marble than it is to lay ceramic! I was laying marble 18 months ago on site. Day rate £150. If I ask for £150 these days some people think I'm extortionate. I really think that the calculation is day rate X number of days you think you can complete the job. Then minus 1 day.
If I think I can get away with it I ask for £160 for labour. However, it's £150 for builders and people I've done jobs for in the past.
Cheers Sean

Gary is spot on with the £130.00 a day, since last year I have dropped all my fixers rates, I had to I started to see work slip away from us on a weekly basis. The final straw came when I was looking at 6 months of work going over to another stone company. I managed to pull the contract in but only after drastic re-costings. The men are ok about it because its better to be working for less than have no work on. When things pick up and the budget is there, they know I will put their rates back up.

We do no private work as such, all our work is with the the big main contractors, and to be honest we hold our own on the stone and marble. Ceramic is another story, when I am awarded any package I never get the ceramics these days, clients tell me what they are paying to xxxxx ltd, and ask me if I can price match then they are happy to hand over the whole package. No I cant is the simple answer, I dont know how some of these ceramic tiling companies survive...they must be walking on site knowing they are on a loser before the first tile is laid. I would have more sleepless nights working like that.

south coast i charge builders and contractors £120 per flat rate 8 till 5. London i charge £135 to £150 per day.(plus fuel if i can get away with it) Most domestic contractors i work for will only pay on the day rate, as they are charging x amount for the metre squared as long as im getting a certain amount laid in day they are happy, but i make sure i explain what prep work needs to be done, as some of them arent happy if you start doing prep when they think you should be tiling. Most of the time they will pay a lab to do the prep before i arrive. Obviously i charge different rates for my private work.
I stick to my guns when contactors and builders try to get you cheaper down here as they are charging a set rate and making on your head,(i do the same when i farm work out) if they want good tiling pay a good rate or pay peanuts and get monkeys.
