I remember him too.

IIRC he was eventually persuaded to move out of his place in London and went into some sort of sheltered accomodation before he died.

There was an interview with him after he had moved. He was it seemed genuinely happy with his new surroundings. He was moved to tears with the relief of being offered to live elsewhere.

His London pad was worth quite a bit.
