I,m stuck in my ways with BAl as well Cj....but have had some jobs that have dried patchy as of late( super flex range ).....so have been looking into mapei grouts as they are virtually efflorescence free and the BAl micro colour is a fortune....
just be aware they dry really quick on the face of the tile
apart bfrom that there great
i like fast setting grout my self but not all guys will

It's like every other material it's what your used to and has never let you down, Tradesmen are slow to change and new ideas, The comfort zone.

You're right there mate. I think tilers should go these open days more often to checkout what it's all about.

Well maybe if I could arrange more freebies from different companies

But locally to me, there arn't that many suppliers to chose from.

Bal or Mapei is all I have...........although I've heard that the place stocking mapei might b changing soon.

I have bought a mixed pallet of palace twice...........and although it was ok stuff...........the rapid set was'nt as rapid as Bal..........so when your doing your average lav floor for instance..........I spent longer waiting for palace to go off than Bal (which I'm used to) I can set my watch by setting times of that

Cheers lads.....it is worth a try.......will have a go on the next floor with the ultra colour........I hope BAL are reading this thread....They need to compete and reduce the price of micro colour or change all grouts to non portland to stop effloresence...

I am a Big BAL user as most peeps know so to change manufactures is heart breaking ..lol lol lol.....Adhesives are spot on...just need to compete on the grout front......

Was grouting 25m2 walls today with Mapei didnt like it one bit! falling off grout float tried various ways to get right consistency and it sets too fast seems to me there just marketing gimmics to add more to price.
Mix it to a nice creamy consistency and in small amounts, washes off brilliantly,it might just take a bit of getting used to.

Thats the problem ,your solution is to keep mixing small amounts., why! Ive used normal cementous grouts for years ,one mix stays workable for hours, cant see the point of fast setting grout in domestic applications . Still think its marketing gimmic just to get extra money out of tilers.
I don't recall you saying which particular Mapei grout you used and had difficulty with.

I have to agree with Brian, mix small bits at a time, and it cleans off really well. Why do you need it to stay in the bucket for hours?

Cant remember which Mapei grout im back on job tommorrow to finish floor and bottom wall tile let you know which it is , no it doesnt have to last hours it was a slight exaggeration on my part but still no ones said why you need a fast setting grout and still seems pointless mixing small amounts time after time when it can be done in one mix!

Fast setting grouts come in handy when doing stone jobs...so the water from the grout does not seep into the stone edges causing it to stain and it is used for grouting fast track applications where the floor needs to walked shortly afterwards etc etc........
