Evening lads, I,ve layed over a hundred floors but never marble, I know it,s the same principle as any other floor tile but I,ve just come back from Tenerife and noticed that there is not even a 1mm step in any of the floor tiles, now no tiler is that good, I presume that because marble is quite soft the constant polishing of the tile by machines takes away any slight difference in levels????? Am I right or is there another reason.???? Thanks in advance for any feedback!!!!

Cityone I know what you mean when I have been to various places throughout the world or even in some posh shops etc over here the floors look perfect! Id love to work on something like that!

Marble is as easy as any other tile to get perfect. Fixing techniques will vary from ceramic to procelain to stone but the finished result should always be lip free.

No floor honing required .
Take your time and take pleasure in the end result.

The floors are honed and polished flat with machines...I thought tilers knew this..?

A bit like this.. [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_LN7-jj3Qhs]YouTube - Grinding Travertine Lippage[/ame]

But as daz mentioned above a correctly prepared floor can be laid flat and lipless..but for that complete slab look it is a different method.

Sorry captain but I have to disagree. I have never met a tiler who can lay a floor completely flat. That is not a slur on you or anyone who fixes natural stone. But it is impossible to lay a large area with large format tiles completely flat. It may look flat but If I go on it with a Levighetor and a planetario head my machine will find lippage. The difference in what we do is we leave the floor so flat you cannot even see the grout lines and that is how the Monolithic look is achieved.

Marble and other natural stone is laid abroad and then flood grouted. It is left for a few weeks and they then get a Grinding and honing company in to grind, hone and polish it flat. That is how the floors get a Monolithic look as indicated by Daves post below.

you try to explain something complex by showing a video like that....rubbish.

try this [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWLptlXVdng]YouTube - Norton Diamond Disk Stone Polishing Pads Training Video[/ame]

this is the last step in a long process-producing the monolithic look

I have seen alot of well laid floors rippled by poor grinding and badly polished room corners where the guys polishing just use wax instead of getting right into the corners with a smaller machine, a well laid floor makes the polishers life far easier and a well ground floor does give a better finish as the floor looks more solid

I'd agree with Terry C's comments above. I might add to the OP that a great deal of floors that are commonly termed ' marble ' or ' stone ' are terrazzo, which requires the grinding process whether for the tile type or the flow out type with brass sectioning, as a required final step. It is this that some clients describe when asking about 'stone tiles' having seen them on holiday. (They don't usually have the required floor depth!)
I assume he knows the dif, having laid floors, though others may not.
