Lots of interesting points, and methods. I have tried over the years to perfect the method ( and am still trying ) the best finish I have managed to date is a thin bead and a light index finger along straight after, run along the bead in one stroke to avoid stop / start marks. Tried tape, no water, water no tape, all are messy and more work than needed IMHO, trust me, try this method, it works.

Having said that, each to their own 😀

Finger method for me also, i think you just get a better feel for it, and then soapy water to smooth. There is a tool you can get from B&Q and Homebase thats ok couple of quid, but fingers all the way!

I was taught to do it with a mix of water and washing up liquid then dip a tapered paintbrush in the mix and lightly run it over the top . Now i am out of the habit though its gotta be corner tape every time.

Each to their own, whatever gives you personally the finish you require is the correct method imo.

tryed the lot, a joiner told me about the empty caulk method a still messed it up, lucky i found out the tape method, although as someone said above, a was advised i was putting it on to thick a bead and that was my problem , no use doing a great job and messing it up with what some people would say is the easy,s part. so it,s masking tape for me.
