Ok... I'm fitting a bathroom at the moment and a floor tile still has to be chosen, I quoted for a 'standard' size tile at the start, the customer told me after I started that she wanted the same tile as i've just fitted in their best friends house -

no problem,chequered black and white (400mm x 400mm),

they then said they wanted a mosaic - no problem but i'll have to screed the floor for a more level surface which they agreed to

they then said the wanted a chequered black and white mosaic 20mm x 20m, after checking the floor which isn't square I said that such a small mosaic and seeing as it is chequered will show up just how much the room is out of square (even if I install a border it will still show up).

So before I could stop myself I came up with the idea of a pebble mosaic floor. Now i've never laid a floor in these, borders yes, floors no, and grouting them is a pain trying to get the grout to sit halfway up the pebble.

So my question is this - do any of you know of a pebble or pebble style mosaic that has a perfectly flat surface? or failing that a pebble mosaic that is lovely to grout? I don't want to push the price up anymore for this customer as it's already incured extras.

They've had a quick look on the net and have seen the following tile just to give you some idea

Our Mesh Backed Pebble Tiles - Island Stone#

Not pebble, but you can get circular mosics, which look good and have a flat surface.

they might be ok, although I've only ever seen them in one colour through out and they what some different shading to give it some depth, There are millions of tiles out there so I'm sure the right tile must be out there... have you used any that you think might go? and if so who were they made by? thanks in advanced guys

Easy to grout, just uses more.
Allow grout required time according to manufacturer before cleaning off. Is important as if you clean off too soon the grout will come out of the joints
Use wash boy and wash boy sponge !

I've used flattened pebbles before, but can't remember where from! still a pain to grout as you get varying joint thicknesses, some joints can be 10mm whereas the next one can be 1mm:yikes:

Think Doug, THINK! were did you get those tiles!

on second thoughts, how well did they lock together? or did you spend days picking mosaic's out and replaceing them?

I did a pebble mosaic floor for a Cornish visitor centre (Pics in my profile) they were flat and easy to use. Available from Craven Dunhill Tiles, Bridgnorth ( and lots of other places probably).
