have you considered a border of plain tiles to the perimeters of the room and then mosiac the rest

Why not get in touch with TF member 'tilesbysandt', who sells tiles in Redruth, and loves the unusal look and have a chat with him? I reckon he'd order you anything you want. Also don't worry about the grouting, if the pebbles are what you'll get, just relax, give yourself time and if you go along in a snake like, s-shaped manner you'll find a rythm that is easy to follow, with a soft rubber float. I often use homemade 'grout floats' for strange intricate uneven work, like mousemats (really) bent into any shape required, works brilliantly. (and a medical rubber reflex hammer gives the odd groutline a really neat finish...!

And yes, a washboy, just stop phaffing and get one (for your birthday:hurray🙂, the cut sponges are just what you need and without the rollers you'd get yourself in a right pickle, as it's important not to get the grout too wet and be fairly quick nevertheless.

I actually prefer a contrasting grout colour, just because it's easier to see what you're doing and it is more effective, but that'll be up to the customer's taste.

You'll have a great time...

Sir Ramic, The pics of your pebble mosaic are righteous!:thumbsup:Very nice indeed.

The thing that drives us crazy with these things is that the sheets are so far out of wack :mad2:that if they are laid down without any adjustment it's evident from 100 feet away where the layout pattern is/was. Either you had nice sheets or you really spent time tweaking them for a nice blending effect.

We finished one not too long ago with "River Rock" from Turkey, and I think this stuff was just scooped out of the river and glued onto sheets with Elmers, total crap, and we had to pull apart every sheet by at least 1/3 to 1/2.:incazzato:But the decorator that sold this junk to the customer made out bigtime at ~$30 a sheet and something like 130 sheets in the bathroom!

thanks guys, I've no real problem spending the time as what ever the customer wants, the customers gets but it's just that the idea came out of my mouth! it's the grouting more than anything I wasn't looking forward to.

Come on Mapei, any chance of you developing a self leveling grout by the end of next week????:mad2:

I had no problems with the grouting. I just let dry harder than i usually would and used the wash boy to get a nice level grout.

ok I got some samples off these guys today, http://www.islandstone.co.uk/ and I must say they couldn't do enough for me and the pebbles look and feel great, they are graded and they have ground the backs of the pebbles off so there is very little difference in height (1-2mm max). The women who I spoke to seemed to think that they were the ones who started the whole pebble tile craze and that I wouldn't have any problems with their sheets interlocking as they are are hand stuck on to the backing whilst in an aluminum jig- I shall let you know if this proves to be the case!

And as for grouting even the spaces look fairly uniform - I know it's only a sample so again I'll keep you updated! and yes Dave I'll be sure to post some pics  (well only if I don't make a complete mess of it!)

So all in all i'm now looking forward to get these stuck down!

Just looked at the link, oooh, they do look good, don't they, added to my favourites just in case....

(Have you gone and got yourself that washboy yet?)

Not yet my dear, i'm a bloke so can only do one thing at a time!

although I have given it a bit of thought, now I know some of you like the Rubi and some like the Karl Dahm, but have any of you had both? and if so which one gets the thumbs up? bearing in mind that I only ever want to buy one and it is going to get passed down to my children when I get round to having some...and then their childrens children...
