Metro tiles without grout

I was speaking with a tiler today and he said that sometimes he puts up mini metro wall tiles using no grout. That is, they're tight together.

I haven't heard of this being done before, so was wondering what thoughts are on this? There would be a 19mm thick Schluter Kerdi-board substrate.

Presumably it would be cheaper as there's no grout and no grouting labour. Afterwards you don't have to keep any grout clean.

So what are the drawbacks? Thanks.

The drawbacks are mainly, it will look rubbish, and the subway tiles aren’t perfect so will need some adjustment, no room for expansion, won’t be waterproof.

🙂🙂

What would be the smallest T-shaped spacer which could be used for the 7.5 x 15 cm mini metros? There would be a Schluter Kerdi-board substrate.

Would it be okay to use the 1 mm thickness?

You could go with 1mm but alot of grout manufacturers specify grout has minimum width of 2mm. Also 1mm will show up the tiniest of variation in tile setting. 2mm is best
