Sharon at viva tiling (miss tiler), most of her work is with mosaics and she's done some mega jobs.

I wouldn't call myself a specialist in mosaics as im always learning new things about mosaics but I can find my way around a swimmingpool !!

It's the one area of my a kills is need to develop more, I know all the work is really in the screed / plastering but some people seem to take it to new levels ( an art). IMO, mosaics are the most challenging installations.

Why do I consider myself a spcialist. Well there is the 3 years of intense training then a further 26 years of practis and continues personal development.

I'm in awe of the people who can do mosaics to a good standard. Takes great skill and patience and a flat substrate.
been honest I tend to shy away from doing much more than insets and stripes.
when I used to employ a few lads ( plumbers ) we did a lot of swimming pool heating systems for pool build company in Derbyshire. The lads who did the mosaic tiling said its all in the rendering. They did a fantastic job. But did feel sorry for the, when grouting what looks like a million tiles !

I'd consider myself a specialist in (Roman) mosaics but definitely not in setting. I always say to clients that if the mosaic is on mesh or reverse I have a tiler to set it. I don't want to spend time getting the experience in setting when there are people out there who do it day in day out. Even if they want me to work direct onto the floor I tell them nothing starts until I have the floor checked by a tiler. It crazes me when I see mosaic artists getting technical advice from........other mosaic artists.
I know it's not rocket science but when you compare the sqm in a year done by a mosaic artist against that by a tiler it's a bit of a no brainer.

hi, amazing images on your profile albums! Is this all your work? I only asked because of the way u've introduced the image. For example, the original from Vatican. What a piece! But u captioned it as a Vatican original. Did u mean it's an image of or your copy? Sorry just a bit unsure of its origin. Or it's too early in morning haha
nevertheless, amazing stuff would love to try it. Must do a bit of research. Can u point me in right direction pls for just general info on having a try at producing a piece. How many pieces would u typically produce for a client? Yeah I know how long is a piece of string! Haha I spose what I'm asking is what is on average a typical job? Irrespective of the size of a piece.

Thanks, yes it's all my own work, copied from original Roman mosaics. The Bull & Elephant is a copy of the original in the Vatican museums.
There are a number of books on mosaic work, it's very simple in principle though but how good you get is really down to how many you do and with Roman mosaics there are a number of set Rules to the way they set the patterns. Like Victorian geometrics (and I'm only going here on what I've read on here and other places on Vic. Geo. stuff) there are ways to do it correctly which you won't see unless you know it which case you'll spot any errors straight away.
If you want any help with the basics to start off let me know and I'll send you out a info. sheet.
The jobs vary, not much commission work around as clients mostly want 'modern' stuff which I don't do. When I get them they are mainly insets in floors from 305mm x 305mm up to 2m x 2m. A lot of my time is now spend teaching or supplying cut marble and kits. Commissions are very nice when they come in though!

To me mosaics are meant to look like they have been fixed individually.
