Moving utilities.

What do you do about moving objects out of the way so you can tile,I mean things like washing machine,dishwaher,cooker,fridge and dining table.
When working by yourself how do you cope with moving items?
Last week I did a kitchen and laundry room for an old lady who had no-one to help her move anything so I had to move the dining table to the end of the room(couldn't be taken apart)tile the kitchen floor when I got to the table I had to tile underneath it leaving 4 tiles where the legs were,I then tiled the laundry room where the appliances didn't cover.The next day I had to move the cooker(f**king arga)fridge,dryer,washing machine,freezer and dining table so I could tile underneath them and then later move them back.
As you can imagine this was very difficult I now have arms like He-Man.Usually I would say these items need to be removed before I start the job or there would be a man there to help me when I need to move the items.

How do you get round this situation?
 
it's a hard life being a tiler sometimes is'nt it..lol.....
i have a sack barrow type trolley. to move heavier items.. usaully best to get everything out of the room but not always possible as you say.......these things are sent to try us simon mate...pmsl.......dave...

As per the book: Carry out a risk assessment and work out if you need other bodies or devices to move the item. (Manual Handling Regs 1992 / HASAW Act 1974). If so, then charge accordingly and explain to the customer why.

If you are struggling to get manpower and tools to do the job, ask the customer to move the items themselves.

You have to think about your insurance if you need to claim for an injury caused by moving items. And unfortunatley with todays claim culture, you have to think about if you damage the customers washing machine etc.

We heard a story here in Cannock where a Tiler moved and put back a washing machine to do a floor. 2 weeks later the machine packed in and the customer tried to blame the tiler for it as they said it was his fault due to the way it mas moved. They tried to get a new machine out of him.

good advice and an interesting story,will look out for that in future and warn customer you are not responsible if any mishaps,maybe even get it in writting
 
I'll not move things back into place anymore. I've scratched tiles moving things back before and was just annoying. I tell them to clear the room for me, completely. Then when finished I leave the job for inspection. Usually tell them to leave the heavy stuff till the next day, before replacing. I get my money and they dont expect me to go all the way back just to move a fridge or whatever.
 
its easier to just make it clear your not going to move furniture. we normally write it in the quote that the room must be empty and prepared before we will commence tiling. It saves hassle in the long run. Customers are w*****s. You try and help them to move things, then they try and sue you for a chip or mark you probably didn;t even do.
 
I usually play this 'off the cuff'...
when i go to a potential customers house, i rely on 1st impressions as much as they do about me.... if i think they are w****rs i'll stipulate that the room should be ready for me..
if it's a little old dear i ask if theres anyone to move the gear, theres usually a grandson or 2 knockin around🙂
