Was chatting to the guy whos doing some work for the couple across the road about how quiet it is for me atm. Told him about a few quotes i've done and how the customers never got back to me. Example: 5.80 mt2 bathroom walls around the bath area i quoted her £135 inc. mats. he thinks it may be because i'm to cheap. Anyone got any opinions on the question? Thx Paul.

I'm curious how you have priced this Paul..materials (I include wear and tear on tools/dust sheets/etc in this) will include adhesive, grout, silicon, spacers, sponges, cloths, edging strip, etc and will be in excess of £35.. fuel/expenses will be in the region of £30.. that leaves you £70 at best for labour before tax/ni.. how long have you allowed to do this job???

Paul - If I read i right that is £135-00 including materials.
Cheap tiles at B&Q would be £48-00.
Adhesive and grout about £15-00.
2 no.Tile trim say £9-00
Sealant £5-00
So that is approx. £58-00 for 5.8 sq mts for LABOUR = £10-00/sq mt.

Its not for me to say if you are cheap but I'am sure you'll get a few replies from others.

Timeless John.

Could have been the other way, another tiler cheaper than you! At this time, you just don't know what other tilers will do to feed their families.

On the other hand, I was in a local tile shop where I often spend and a lady was buying expensive mosaic marble. Right in front of me they recommended another tiler who is up to his eye balls with work..............:incazzato:

Ceramic tiles i wasn't supplying them just the adhesive and grout customer was supplying tiles and trim. I priced the job at £20 2mt and around £15 for mats. Nothing difficult about the job no windows etc. just around the bath area.

You're selling yourself short Rad.. you're going to be there at least one day, two if you're doing the silicon; Day one; leave home, arrive on site, set up, prep and prime the walls, fix the tiles, allow adhesive to dry, grout, allow grout to dry, clean tiles, washdown, clean up, pack up, go home.. day two; leave home, arrive on site, set up, silicon, wash down, clean up, pack up, go home..You can do it in a day if the grout dries quick enough and the bath surface is dry enough for the silicon.. To achieve this in a day, you need to be using rsf and a flexi grout such as mapei, otherwise the addy and grout won't be dry enough and the silicon won't bond properly..At retail, a bag of rsf is £30+, a bag of mapei flexi grout £15+, tube of good quality silicon £7+, plus your spacers, sponges, etc. The fact that you can get the materials cheaper doesn't mean you charge it at that price, the difference is part of your profit margin to help cover your overheads, warranty, etc..Assuming you did it in a day then labour would be between £100-£200 depending on your skills/area. Realistically, the silicon will warrant a return visit so it's another half day between £50-£100.. Then you have your expenses at say £30..Then you should add a percentage of the labour cost/expenses as the balance of your profit margin..remember, your wage is not your profit margin, it's an overhead..

Whilst there are clients out there who will always go for the cheapest price (and most live to regret it), most clients are wise enough to realise that tradesmen have to make a living/profit.. They have a fair idea of what the going labour/material rate is and how long it would take to do a job properly..If they think your price is too cheap, they'll think twice about using you..

personally i dont think its about that your too cheap for a job like 6 m2 id go in at a day of £150 inc adhesive grout trim which is a fair price for my area

the reason why youre not probably getting these jobs is your probably to dear in some customers eyes ive lost alot of quotes due to being to expensive whereas ive deemed it to be a fair price for decent work

rad you will be suprised how many cheap tilers there are out there. Try if you havent got one make a portfolio book ive just had one made inside i have a introduction page on my company and pictures with a description of the jobs ive completed iv also ordered some new work wear which im getting logo d. It could make the difference in gaining new clients

so far im relying off work from other trades word of mouth etc im always keen to gain new contacts

worth a shot

say Rapid set flexi adhesive and grout, say £20, plus a days wage £120- £180, say £150 to split the difference, so I'd get it £170, that's £35 quid difference. It's not gonna put to many people off maybe you just got an impolite customer. I bet the phone rings tomorrow, customer saying "£135, a bit cheap!"

Well a quick calc for our area at 5.8m2 ceramic including addy grout and silicon using powder on the wall fastset you will be in and out in a day got it to £ 156.00 IMO that is prob the top end of what you could get for this job so your not far out. to try and charge anymore for 6m2 is a bit of a liberty but thats only my opinion...no mater how fast or slow you are at tiling a customer isnt going to pay for two days labour for 6m2.
