Need help identifying substrate please.

Got a customer who has taken the tiles off themselves in their bathroom that I will shortly tile.

One wall, an internal wall, with bricks in the middle, has what I can see is pink plaster, but it has a grey green coating of something over it. The wall is sound and pretty flat, but I dont know if I can tile onto this or not. Im pretty sure its not paint, Im wondering if its some older plastering technique not used anymore.

You can dig bits out with blade, maybe 1-2mm thick, and it seems bonded to the pink stuff underneath. Could it be an old finishing plaster?

Not sure till I see - but plaster skim was grey for years before changing to the pinky brown you see these days - could be that:smilewinkgrin:

It is similar feel to plaster, but I would say slightly harder when trying to damage it

Same colour all way through? Its grey/green for 1mm then pink plaster looking stuff underneath.

Whatever it is, its neat and tidy, and the wall is good to tile onto, if I can.

Sounds like a product from British Gypsum called Thistlbond-it ThistleBond-it

sounds like old finish as has been mentioned, is there another part of the house you can have a dig about to see if it is the same.

it's maybe a bonding/skim slurry coat, if so, I wouldn't tile onto it

solid set plaster as long as its sound tap around listen for drumminess sand back paint and prime:8:

Used before Doug and it goes rock hard and stinks very well

It just looks like plaster finish mate - If it's hard and sound enough and not loose at all, the I personally would treat it as gypsum plaster and prime with Primer G before fixing with cement based adhesive such as P9 or Keraflex

The wall is sound, Ive seen alot worse in new builds I'll talk to the customer and see what he thinks. Properly primed and with the right adhesive, I'm pretty sure it will bond.

If you run your hand over it does it does feel course, as if it has aggregates in it

I'd make every effort to identify it, and then take it from there. We probably need some better pis to be honest

No, its a nice smooth finish.

I will borrow a camera, and try to go round tomorrow after work and get better pics.

I wouldn't hesitate to screw on quarter inch hardi-backer and not have to worry about tile adhesion because that's what hardi-backer is for,never second guess yourself mate,some callbacks can be expensive,good luck,Mike

Update: Basically, I lost the job because he had tilers round who told him it would be fine to tile onto the walls. So I bid him good luck, and that was that. Problem solved

I got a phone call today asking if I can save the job :lol: he kicked the guy out, and wants me to tile the floor (marble) as he doesnt want that guy doing it.

I start tomorrow evening, and well blow me down, my price has gone up a bit
