Need some help please !!!

I am about to tile my bathroom and I am getting all sorts of conflicting advice.
I am tiling onto WPD ply, using Schluter Ditra Matting and porcelain tiles.

• Schluter are saying to use 'Single Part Flexible Adhesive'.
• BAL's support line are saying to use 'Rapid Set Adhesive with Admix AD1' or Super Cover Rapid Set'.
• Topps Tiles are saying to use 'Rapid Set Adhesive' or 'Single Part Flexible Adhesive'.
• Some sites say that you can use modified adhesives with Schluter Ditra Matting and some sites say that you can't.
• And some sites say that you can use unmodified adhesives with porcelain tiles and some say that you can't.

hi andy are you fitting underfloor heating with this?

personally if its a standard floor without ufh i would ditch the ply and i wouldnt spec for the schluter either
id fit a 6mm knauf cement board and tile with a good spf

What thickness of ply are you using?
Is this securely fixed to the joists or as an overlay?

What tiles are you fixing?

deffo use a cement based backer board over your ply, better still an insulation board if you're having under floor heating. Don't tile straight over the ply. Single part flexible adhesive should be fine in this case.

Hi there, I am not fitting underfloor heating and have already layed the ply and have bought the Ditra Matting and the porcelain tiles. Having spent a lot of money I would like to use the stuff that I have purchased.

:welcome: might need a bit more info reg tiles area and is the floor deflection free

Have been advised to do so because of movement with the wooden substrate.

You will need to sort out the movement in substrate before you proceed

is it a large room? and what thickness ply have you used?

I have put 18mm ply onto the joists with loads of noggins and am using 30x60 porcelain tiles.

andy, you have to make sure that your floor is bounce free, (ie deflection) no amount of backer boards or ditra will solve this, it's down to good old joist strength and plenty of noggins before you even lay the ply.

I am actuall tiling both my kitchen and bathroon. The kitchen is appromimately 4.5m x 2.5m and the bathroom is approximately 2.5 x 2.5.

Does the floor move if you bounce on it (stand on your toes then drop down to flat footed )

No movement at all.

well you can ditch the ditra and overboard with cement boards using a spf adhesive and screwed at 150 centres. this will give you a good substrate to tile on
