Why give a price and then expect to negotiate? When I do my shopping I don't get to the cashier and offer him/her £70 when the cost of the goods is £85. Give the best price from the start, list what is in that price and stick to it
I cannot believe you never try and negotiate a lower price with a supplier? I was buying rubble bags from my local builders merchants - I told him I was offering free advertising for their business (who's name was on the bag) for a 50 mile radius. He arranged for me to have a 25% discount on the trade price until the end of the year. I have done the same with Marmox boards from my local plumbers merchant - they matched the "Bristol" price to get my trade. You want to watch Martin Lewis talking about discounts at 90 words per minute!

I always push my suppliers to give me lower prices. Just got an extra £100 off a kitchen today from my suppliers, told them my customer had a budget and she still had to account for the plumber in it. I have knocked some off my labour for fitting (Nope) can they help me get the deal? It was done as quick as that and I earn an extra £100 for making the phone call.

But back to the question, no I do not move on price. The majority of my work is recommendation so I do not come across too many occasions where I am quoting against anybody. When I do I don't need to know what other people are charging, just that when they compare the quotes they are like for like. If you are not comparing like for like then it's obvious that there will be a difference in price.

well time and time again after giving a price they say whats your best price i then double that and say thats my best price with a smile they soon agree with the first one or when they ask for a discount i say this dont count and that dont count again move on no come back. its as simple that close the door behind you no come back

Exactly........

Everyone shops around for the best prices, sure folk do it on here for the best prices for different materials & products, so I would expect it from customers also. Every job / customer is different so I take each job as it comes. One thing I do do though, Is after I've got the job and I'm getting to know the customer, I always ask if they had other quotes, how they chose me, why etc. Its good for feedback & customers are always happy to explain why they chose me. Usually it turns out my prices were about the same, rarely the cheaper or sometimes the most expensive.. but the feedback helps going into future quotes, 'cos its not always about the price (sometimes!)

Just been to price a house today, plastering and tiling it ( one for us cowboy multitraders) he knocked me down 50p a m2 for plastering, but i put a extra £1 on anyway, so im like 50p up on my usual price, i see no harm in a bit of banter with a customer

Ye ha.

I always blag a discount with suppliers but that's different in my eyes. I'm using them every week and spending thousands of pounds a year with them it's not a one off.

It's very different with suppliers as you say. Your purchasing branded goods you can get from a ton of other suppliers. They are retailers of goods not services, ok you might pay a little extra from a supplier with good service but 90% of it is based on the price of goods.

Where as tradesmen are the other way round, 90% service and 10% goods.

I won't really budge on service price but when I supply goods such as white goods with kitchens I try and at least match internet suppliers on price.
