i posted last night about blown skim behind the tiles, sorry i had to go ,two teenage daughters giving me bad looks about being on the laptop two long. iam trying to save tiles and have soaked them in water, hopefully this will help to get the addy and skimcoat off them.does anyone know of any product i can put into the water to speed up this process, or am i flogging a dead horse. how can we be sure that there is a sufficent key with skimcoat on render , when it could be the weight of the tiles that breaks the key, we dont always get to prepare the substrate , and our reliant on somebody else`s work been done properly.

paul I don't envy you. Tiling on a surface you are not sure about.

If I was really pushed to do it, I would not promise the client anything..I would have a good tap around remove the weak spots and fill with BAL rapid set. I have use it before to an inch in depth but only on a spot repair and it's held up. I would also drill some holes at 15'' intervals and BAL them in to strenghten the skim adhesion.

If the skim didn't hold up to drilling, I would stop the job. New substrate.
Just my view, others may disagree.
