New member needs advice

Hi all,

I came across this forum when I was researching my new house renovation. I am re-fitting two bathrooms. The one will be a shower room and the previous owners had tiled straight onto plasterboard in the shower area. I have pulled down all the pb which was in a bad state (mould etc). Behind the pb is poly sheeting obviously put there to stop any water get to the timber stud work. Also the Walls are insulated with old looking wool type (80's instulation). Should I remove all of this? Also they had made vents under the short tray into the internal adjoining rooms should these stay?
I plan to re-board with 12.5mm pb and tank the whole area a couple of times.
Any advice for a newbie.

Yes the poly would have been a vapour barrier.... as for the vents then i have not come across those before.?

Is there an expelair in the room.?

No there isn't an extrator fan but I will be fitting one. Is it best to leave the sheeting there as they are a little taty and mould stained etc. I could easily replace them but do I need to if I'm tanking the shower area?

Yes, remove anything that has mould on it..

Can't get photos at the mo but will do later. They are basically internal vent covers over a hole in the stud wall that vent the underneath of the shower tray. They go into the bedroom, hall and other bathroom. But I have never seen this before and will it need venting if I'm tanking the whole area as it should be sealed and not get wet.

I've decided to re-apply some new poly sheeting onto the stud and block up the vents. I have 2 norcros tanking kits, what would be the best addy to use with 240 x 480 ceramic tiles. I've got some Dunlop waterproof and flexible will this be ok or is it best to go with norcros same as the tanking kit?

I would use a single part flexible powdered gear, white for the walls as you will probably going for light grout.

Can I use the Dunlop pre-mix on the non tanked areas that will not be in direct contact with water? I've used similar before and worked fine.

With your tile sizes I would also continue using the spf ahesive, the tubbed addy is a dispersion and needs air to dry so will take a long time with your tiles.
