Hi Johnny, & welcome, as Dave says.If the glue is stiff it'll scrape,though it's probably like
the bitumen stuff used on vynils as you describe it. Just a note of warning,some of these adhesives from the 60s contain asbestos!! On a couple of jobs in the past we were told to not sweep it,only vacuum then have it latexed over as to remove it would have to be done by a specialist. I suppose the safety thing is no dust & quality masks,consider having it tested.The stability is key to your next move.

cheers for that i didn't give a thought about asbestos,i've always been led to believe you couldn't latex over vinyl glue,
 
hi there new to this im not a time served tiler but done a 6 month course couple of years ago with my brother done a few jobs since and they have been really good im very conifident at it and thinking of starting up myself can anyone give advice would be much appreciated
 
Hi Johnny ,& to be truthfull I can't say either way,😳 it was an instruction. Maybe to save money. Though it was the 2 part bottle & bag stuff & there were a number of tech guys had a look...Regards Nigel
