Thanks for all the help and encouragement everyone - only started this project so last minute as we found the floor was rotten due to poor maintenance of previous owners! Fingers crossed baby will stay put until bathroom is finished!!

Always have trim. If you don't like plactic go for alli or chrome. But always have trim. just my opinion.

Hi welcome and good luck, i would use a trim for ceramic, esp' on the external corners, i.e. window cill and a aluminium or chrome would suit if you dont like the white plastic ones.

if you can imagine putting a candle or something similar on your window cill and knocking the edge its quite likely you could chip the tile edge trim is a way of protecting the edge of the tile look at square edge trims

Will go back to the shop and have a proper look at trims, as you all seem to think they are worth it! The other thing I am still unclear on is what kind of trowels we should be using. We are using 450 x 450mm porcelain on the floor with single part fastflex adhesive. On the walls we are using 400 x 250mm ceramic with White Star.

Hi mummy, welcome to the forum. I tell you what, you'd get a better price on Mapei adhesives, especially retail prices! And I'd use a cement-based adhesive throughout personally. (Rather than a ready-mixed tubbed adhesive)

Is there a good alternative to BAL single part fastflex then? We've got a chipboard floor hence the choice.

I would not tile to chipboard, my advice would be to overboard with a cement backer board ie. James Hardie / no more ply etc

Don't have the depth. Boards have mostly been replaced, and are very well screwed down - extra noggins etc.

Better to replace chipboard with exterior ply 15mm thick.
