Northern Ireland Day rates

Alright guys, I have recently started at the tiling, taking myself away to england to do the course. Now I have taken the plunge and started out on my own, and have secured myself a lot of sub-contracting work from a couple of large reputable companies (depending on price for day rates). My problem is, being that I am just starting out Im not sure how much to ask for! And I cant afford to lose this work by being too expensive, but i also cant afford to get ripped off!! So could anyone recommend a pretty reasonable day rate for me. Its all bathrooms and kitchens, so nothing too difficult, few floors and that too. Or sould some1 provide me with a comprehensive tiling price breakdown for NI

Hmmm Day rates ?? well if i was inclined to employ someone i would want to know what i could expect for the day rate i paid. So lets say i said day rate was £120, what would i get in return? 5m2, 8m2, 10m2 ???
How would it look if the employer gave you £120 the same as someone else he employed and you fixed 8m2 while the other guy fixed 15m2?
Can you see my point?
If you were asking day rates for a private job then it would be between £120 and £200 depending in the situation. Then again i know a few tilers around here that work for £80 but they get a van to get to work in and its constant work, so its £400 a week and no fuel/travelling expenses to find.

so, u reckon, go to work the 1st day and see how i get on, then sort out money? I am fast enough and very tidy at my work. I reckon i wil easily keep up with the other guys he has doin work for him, I was thinkin £100 a day as a fair wage tho. Cheers for replyin big guy, all feedback is much appreciated!

Not sure of the going rates for anything in NI, i would always go in higher than £100 and if they knock you down a little then its all good.
I would keep an eye on other tilers though, they may not like you tiling more than them as this could mean they would be 1st out the door if you are offering your employer more for his money. Its a tricky one when you 1st start out. You just have to dip your toe in and keep your eyes open.
On another note, it has been known in the past for other fixers to get jealous or have a competitive streak aboout them, childish i know but it does happen. So when you have finished for the day check your tiling make sure its good. I have known other fixers go into someone elses bathroom etc and knock a few tiles out of line or even wipe grout on the walls/floor to make out you havent cleaned properly. I would hope all that is in the past and everyone acts like adults but who knows. Alll this is based on my experience over the last 31 years as a fixer and contracts manager. I hope i have seen it all.

new to the site and i was hoping to get some info on a cutting machine i own.I wanted to know if anyone knew where to get spares for a sima Perla 230 rail cutting machine.I have had it for ten years and the bed is worn.I have been on the web and gone round and round in circles !!!!!!!! its driving me crazy.
the shop i bought it from went bust can any one HELP

Hi there peazy.

First off as far as I know in my own experiance, working onjobs like that they mostly want to know what you would want per square meter and not day rates.

As ramic said, if they we're to agree a day rate, they wouldn't have a clue what they we're going to get for that day rate, so they normally work in sqm, that way they pay for exactly what they get, and the quicker you tile the quicker they get the job done, and not have someone going like a snail on a day rate which is open to abuse.

The job centers advertising for experianced and time served fixers on meter rates of between £9 and £15, depending on the company, and I have never seen any advert ever giving a day rate.

If you can tile well and quickly and the job is straight forward walls then you should be able to knockout 15sqm in a day easily, depending on tile type and cuts, so even going in at £11 a meter you'd be clearing £165 a day, over 5 days £825.

Thats a rate you'd probably never do on domestics as the amount you tile per job is only small in comparrison, but on sites etc where theres nearly an endless amount to tile as houses are going up then low sqm rates combined with large amounts of tiling equals a lot of money for the tiler.
It all comes down to the type of tiling and your speed, and if both are good then charging £11 a sqm is good money in anyones book.

Hi there peazy,
I'v been at in the north and south of Ireland for a few years now,
you'll def have to dip your feet first,the work is slowing down badly south and north at the minute and there is a few guys undercutting prices galore too,the top price north is about 12 after cis deduction per yard which is very good but a lot of companies are offering 10 and below lately,co.down being no different.
If you can get £120 a day to start that would give you scope to improve.

Hello Peazy,
So you are 'the competition'?? Well welcome to the forum and tiling as well.
Dayrates are a tilers way of working out how much they make or need to make. I always work mine out before and after a job so when im pricing up similar jobs in the future i know where to start form. Work is a wee bit quieter as Hillhead says. However im on a few good sites at domestic rates. £20/m for floors and £30/m for walls. Thats what i work for and im usually busy. Big floors i can do 30m a day and tricky walls with small tiles it can be as low as 2 m per day. i only do commercial work if it pays, working for around £10 per m is a waste of time and i suppose no-one should do it. However if you need the work and we all have bills to pay then i suppose if it was quiet i would work for that rate too.

Good luck anyway. Do you have decent discounts set up with a few tile shops? I find when im quoting that saying if they purchase tiles at x or y then they can get my 40% off (as long as im doing the job). The shops also hand out my cards. That really helps mate.

alright dave, i have cards comin this week and i have been on the phone with every shop i can find askin them if they can take my cards and hand them out. I actually havent got any discount deals or anythin worked with anybody yet, but it sounds like a very good idea! think ill get on to that tomorrow.
